rAInge Sensor Patient FAQs

Getting started

What is the rAInge Sensor used for?

The rAInge Sensor measures your arm movements during rehabilitation exercises. It helps record movement performance and track your progress over time through the mobile app.

Do I need a smartphone to use the sensor?

Yes. The sensor connects to the mobile app using Bluetooth. Your phone also needs an active internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) to upload your exercise data.

How do I turn the sensor on?

The sensor wakes automatically when you pick it up. When awake and ready, the LED indicator should show green. The sensor should not be connected to the charger while pairing.

How do I know if my sensor battery needs charging?

The battery level indicator can be seen at the top right hand corner of the Home Screen on your App. Try to keep your sensor charged above 30% before starting your exercises

The LED indicators on the front of the sensor also show the status:

  • Red light: Battery needs charging

  • Steady blue light: Sensor is charging

  • Green light: Sensor is awake and operational

  • Flashing green light: Sensor is connected to your phone

How long does the sensor take to charge?

The sensor should charge to 90%+ in about two hours.

Wearing the sensor

Where should I place the sensor on my arm?

Place the sensor directly against your bare skin on your arm. Do not wear it over clothing, as this may allow it to move and affect measurement accuracy.

Which way should the sensor face?

The arrows on the sensor casing should point upwards towards your head. The USB-C charging port should face down towards your wrist. The sensor should sit on the outer side of your arm.

Can I wear the sensor over a sleeve?

No. The sensor should be fitted directly onto your skin. Clothing underneath the sensor may cause it to slip and lead to inaccurate measurements.

How tight should the strap be?

The strap should be secure enough that the sensor does not move during exercise, but it should remain comfortable and not restrict circulation.

Can I use the sensor on either arm?

The sensor should only be used on the arm which is being studied ie the side which has the problem, injury or treatment. Plcing the sensor on the incorrect arm will result in abnormal data being recorded and collected.

Can I shower while wearing the sensor?

No you should never use your sensor in the bath or shower. It should be kept dry.

Connecting the sensor

My phone cannot find the sensor. What should I do?

Try the following:

  1. Make sure Bluetooth is switched on.

  2. Make sure the sensor is not connected to the charger.

  3. Pick up the sensor to wake it.

  4. Move your phone closer to the sensor (within approximately 30 cm).

  5. Restart the app if needed.

Why do I need a verification code when connecting?

The verification code provides an additional security step and helps create an encrypted connection between your sensor and smartphone.

Can someone else use my sensor?

The sensor you have been given is for your use only. If other people use your sensor, this may result in the upload of erroneous data to your profile and invalidate your results.

During exercises

Why does the app ask me to calibrate the sensor?

Calibration allows the sensor to understand its position and accurately measure your movements. Calibration is required before starting exercises and again before external rotation exercises.

What position should I be in during calibration?

For the initial calibration:

  1. Stand upright.

  2. Let both arms hang naturally by your sides.

  3. Follow the app instructions.

  4. Remain still during the countdown.

  5. Copy the avatar’s movement until calibration is complete.

See the specific instructions on the App for the differences with the second calibration pose

What happens if I move during calibration?

Movement during the countdown may affect calibration accuracy. Remain still until the app confirms calibration has finished.

How many repetitions do I need to complete?

For the core exercises, the app will guide you. The guide describes completing five repetitions for forward flexion, abduction, and external rotation exercises.

How quickly should I perform the exercises?

Perform the movements at a normal, comfortable pace. Do not rush the movements or perform them deliberately slowly.

How often should I complete my exercises?

For most patients the exercise sessions should be performed three times per day unless otherwise advised by your healthcare professional

What if I cannot complete an exercise because of pain?

Only move within your comfortable range. Record your pain score after the session using the app questionnaire. If you are concerned about pain or your symptoms, contact your healthcare professional.

What should I do if the sensor falls off during an exercise?

We recommend cancelling the session and restarting the session if the sensor position is lost.

Can I stop an exercise session halfway through?

You can pause your exercise session between sets of exercises ie between the different exercises. The App will prompt you to restart when you are ready. Remember you should not remove the sensor during the pause. If you do remove it, it is better to start the whole session again.

Exercise-specific questions

How do I perform the forward flexion exercise?

Start standing upright. Raise your arm forwards and upwards towards the ceiling while keeping your elbow straight and thumb facing forwards. Return your arm to the starting position and repeat as instructed.

How do I perform the abduction exercise?

Start with your arm by your side. Point your thumb outwards and lift your arm sideways overhead while keeping your elbow straight. Return to the starting position and repeat.

How do I perform the external rotation exercise?

Before external rotation, the app will ask you to complete another calibration. Hold your arm with your elbow bent at 90 degrees, fingers pointing forwards and thumb pointing upwards. Keep your elbow close to your body while moving your arm as instructed.

Data and results

What happens after I finish my exercises?

After completing your session, the app will ask you how you are feeling. You should select your maximum pain score from 0 to 10 and save the session.

What does the pain score mean?

The pain score records the highest level of pain experienced during the movements:

  • 0 = No pain

  • 10 = Worst pain you can imagine

Where can I see my progress?

Your progress can be viewed using the progress charts at the bottom of the app home screen.

Is my movement data shared with my healthcare team?

Yes. Your data is shared with your clinician who can view your progress on the Clinician App but is otherwise anonymised

Troubleshooting

The app is not uploading my results. What should I check?

Check that your phone has an active internet connection through Wi-Fi or mobile data. The sensor requires a network connection to upload data.

The sensor light is not turning green. What should I do?

Try:

  • Open the App before touching the sensor

  • Pick up the sensor to wake it.

  • Ensure it is not connected to the charger.

  • Check that the battery is charged.

  • Restart the app and try connecting again.
